"Drinking Pants are the ultimate ice breaker," says organizer/emcee Pablo Fahrenheit. "I've made good friends at bars or beer festivals because I occasionally wear goofy pants that cause others to comment and strike up a conversation."
The thought eventually emerged that bringing others together through the power of pants might be a fun event.
Originally conceived to have a good time and promote a goofy hashtag, the purpose of the Drinking Pants Pageant deepened a week before the inaugural show when the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida killed 49 people and wounded 58 more on June 12, 2016.
Can we please stop killing each other? wondered Fahrenheit. "I don't care if you're gay, straight, black, red, green, white or brown. I don't care if you're short or tall, fat or skinny. I don't care if you're Christian, Muslim, Hindu or agnostic," he says. "We're all just people. I know nice people in all these categories. If goofy pants can be a catalyst for bringing people together, then this silly event is more important now than ever before."
So, now it's a thing: the Drinking Pants Pageant. Friends and strangers gather on the catwalk to celebrate life. And drinking. And pants.
